Admission Policy Statement

St. Gerard’s is a Catholic co-educational school committed to giving all pupils in its care the best education possible. It aspires to ensure they achieve their potential and that the end result  is well-rounded young adults who are articulate, reflective and confident.

The Right of Admission

The right of admission to the Senior School rests ultimately with the Headmaster acting on behalf of the Board.

Consideration

In exercising his discretion over who is admitted, the Headmaster will consider, among other things, the following:

  1. Junior School Applicants: Entry to the Senior School is the norm, but is conditional on the recommendation of the Junior School Principal and the agreement of the Headmaster of the Senior School.
  2. Siblings: While there is no automatic entry for siblings, entry to the Senior School is the norm.
  3. External Applicants: A number of non-Junior School applicants, (who are not siblings) will be considered for admission to First Year. External applicants will be considered for entry to other years as and if vacancies arise. Special consideration is given to children of past pupils.
  4. Gender Mix: The School’s aim is to ensure an acceptable gender mix as far as is possible.
  5. Applications: A cut-off date, after which applications will not be considered, may apply.
  6. If the Headmaster believes that St. Gerard’s cannot provide for the educational needs of an applicant, entry will not be offered. To ensure that applicants can benefit from the educational programmes on offer, assessments and interviews will be carried out. The educational programme offered culminates in the Leaving Certificate.
  7. The numbers admitted to the school are governed not only by the above, but by the actual capacity of the school.
  8. Not withstanding all of the above, the Headmaster, acting on behalf of the Board, has the right to refuse admission to the school.
  9. In the case where a pupil is not admitted to the school, parents have a right to appeal the school’s decision under Section 29 of the Education Act.
