UNDER
14’s AND UNDER 13’s
A
much depleted Under 14/Under 13 side (due to school tour to
Barcelona) travelled to Kilkenny for the end of season fixture
and while the Under 14s won, the Under 13s were defeated.
It was a great day out and many thanks to Mr. Rory O’Connor
and Mr. Shaun McCarthy for facilitating the opportunity.
Forster
Cup Final (27th March 2007)
Belvedere
College 15 St. Gerard’s School 13
The
silence of disbelief at the final whistle of this game amongst
the St. Gerard’s supporters tells much of the story.
St. Gerard’s did not deserve to lose this game and were
the best team for 60 of the 70 minutes. All credit to Belvedere
for taking their chances.
The
Senior 2nds under the Captaincy of Oliver Rosenstock played
with wonderful confidence and spirit on Wednesday and as with
all St. Gerard’s teams, they moved the ball from wing
to wing playing entertaining fifteen man rugby. Injury nor
Lady Luck were not with us on Wednesday but everyone involved
in the Squad should be so proud of their efforts.
To
Damian Hall and Seamus Jennings a sincere word of gratitude
for the work you have put into this squad throughout the season.
The improvement, the spirit and the skill they showed was
a reflection of the hard work.
SCT
AND SENIOR 2ND’s. (16th April 2007)
The
Senior 1st and Senior 2nd Rugby teams gave two excellent performances
in their respective finals in the Leinster Senior School Plate
Final against St. Mary’s College (20-13) and in the
Forster Cup Final against Belvedere College (15-13).
The
success of both teams throughout the season reflects most
positively on the effort the boys put in throughout the season
and in particular their commitment to success.
Many
thanks to all the students who gave of their time on Wednesday
and Friday afternoon to support the teams and brought so much
colour and enthusiasm to the occasions.
With
a little bit of “lady luck”, both teams could
have easily have brought the silverware back to the school.
Well
done as always to Joe McDonnell, Tony Ward, Damian Hall and
Seamus Jennings for their excellence of coaching with the
whole squad throughout the season.
ART
EXHIBITION (23rd March 07)
One
of the highlights of the School Calendar to date was the Art
Exhibition hosted in the Junior School Hall over the weekend.
The
Art Exhibition was a great success from many viewpoints, not
least the involvement of the Junior School students and their
interest in the paintings they viewed.
The
large crowd on Friday and Saturday were also a testament to
the popularity of this event, not withstanding the very large
number of paintings and other artwork that were sold.
It
was clear from the event and other recent literary success
in the school that the school will need to place the promotion
of the Arts higher on our agenda.
A
special word of thanks to the In House Committee for the tireless
work behind the scenes organising such a large event and to
the Cherry Lane Gallery for their support and professionalism
over the weekend.
2nd
Year - SPANISH TOUR (21 –24 March 07)
Forty
1st & 2nd Year Students enjoyed immensely their tour to
Barcelona and its environs.
The
tour was organised by the Spanish Department and had a wonderful
mixture of fun, education, culture and experiencing the Spanish
lifestyle.
Well
done to all the students who travelled and for their positive
and excellent behaviour throughout the tour.
A
special word of gratitude to Ms. Avril Herriott, Ms. Cathy
Molloy and Ms. Ciara Ní Mháirtín for
organising the tour and for facilitating the experience for
all of the students.
MEDJUGORJE
PILGRIMAGE (16th April 2007)
A
group of twenty-one 5th Year students, accompanied by Mr.
Seamus Jennings and Ms. Paula Hillman, travelled to Medjugorje
during the second week of the Easter Holidays where the students
spent the week in a family run hotel.
The
pilgrimage included a guided tour of the Shrine, attending
all of the religious ceremonies during the week and a meeting
with one of the Visionaries. It also included climbing the
hill of Apparition, climbing Mount Krizevac to follow the
Way of the Cross, visiting the various communities in the
area as well as day trips to the beautiful cities of Dubrovnik
and Mostar.
Medjugorje
is a very unique place and certainly has left a life-long
impression on the students who travelled there. Our sincere
thanks to Seamus Jennings and Paula Hillman for all the work
that went into organising the pilgrimage and for accompanying
the students in this trip of a lifetime.
MODEL
UNITED NATIONS PARLIAMENT (19th April 2007)
The
Model United Nations Parliament took place in Jury’s
Hotel, Ballsbridge, during the first week of the Easter Break.
St.
Gerard’s School was represented by Dearbhail O’Crowley,
Lucie Shelly, Fiona Murray and Sophie Kruseman from 5th Year
who were the envoys for Guatemala.
Dearbhail
O’Crowley was awarded an Outstanding Delegation Award
– another remarkable achievement.
Over
fifteen hundred students from all over the world took part
and the standard of open debate was remarkably high.
Congratulations
to the team who did themselves and the school proud in debating
very difficult topics in front of such a large crowd.
A
special word of thanks to Ms. Jennifer Halford for the hard
work she put in to preparing this group for the event and
facilitating the opportunity for them.
