Monthly News - February 2006

Rugby and Hockey - 28th February

Last week was one of the busiest sports weeks in the school to date this year with the school playing in excess of twenty hockey and rugby matches against strong opposition, with the majority of games won or drawn and the numbers of games lost was by the minimal one score only. Yes, the participation is most important but what is more satisfying is the clear progress which teams have made throughout the season and the development of skills and team spirit that is most evident. Team Spirit is not something that you train for - it is something which you build. The team spirit in St. Gerard’s, among all our teams, is most gratifying and is something we should build on as a community. Well done to everyone for their participation, their effort and for the spirit in which you play your sport.

Senior 2nd Rugby Team - 27th February
Well done to the Senior 2nd Rugby Team on their excellent performance on Saturday last February 25th in defeating Terenure College. This result clearly shows the hard work done during the season by the squad and their coaches and augurs well for next season.

Many thanks to the coaches, Seamus Jennings and CiaranVance.

Under 14 Rugby - 27th February
Well done to the Under 14 Rugby Team on their excellent performance on Saturday last February 25th in defeating Blackrock College in Blackrock. This result clearly shows the hard work done during the season by the squad and their coaches and augurs well for next season.

Many thanks to the coaches, Rory O’Connor, Mark Doyle and Eoin Toolan.

Aid to Developing Countries - 22nd February
2nd Year students have been working on “Aid to Developing Countries” in Geography Class. I would encourage you to read their posters to enrich your own moral, spiritual and cultural awareness.

Their work will be displayed around the school for the next week.

Rugby - Irish Under 19's - 20th February
Many congratulations to our Senior Cup Team Captain, Kyle Tonetti for his selection for the Irish Under 19 Team.

Kyle has been selected as outside centre to play against Wales on this Saturday 25th February in Stradbrook – Blackrock College RFC’s ground. I encourage as many of you as possible to go along and support Kyle.

This is a tremendous honour for the school on top of Burschi Wojnar’s selection on the Irish Schoolboys Side earlier this season.

Senior Cup Team - 1st February

St. Gerard’s 22 – St. Mary’s College 34

Well done to the SCT for providing everybody with a feast of rugby yesterday in Donnybrook. It was an intriguing encounter to have. The SCT produced a wonderful display of open fifteen man rugby in the second half, scoring three tries, having one disallowed and being most unlucky not to score a fifth.

We did not have “Lady Luck” with us yesterday. We conceded two very uncharacteristic tries in the first half and in no way did the half time score reflect the balance of power. The team showed their true ability in the second half and highlighted the spirit, character and skill that we all know was in this team.

Well done also to the cheerleaders in their organisation of the cheerleading and especially to all of the supporters who attended yesterday and gave such strong and vocal support to the team. The colours you wore in support of the team yesterday added greatly to the occasion.

To our coaching and management team, Joe McDonnell, Tony Ward and Mícheál McMullan - the team and the school are greatly indebted to you for your commitment and hard work throughout the season.
