Congratulations
to Emma Fenelon, Stephen Kenneally, Brigid Roche & Ian Sinnott Rugby
St. Gerard’s School 3 – Cistercian College, Roscrea
13.
Well done yesterday to our Junior Cup Team who put up a
heroic performance against a strong Roscrea team yesterday. The score in no way
reflects the closeness of the game and the opportunities that St. Gerard’s had
to score tries. Roscrea’s second half try was totally against the run of play
and a very lucky match deciding break for them. We wish them well in the following
rounds. The team was excellently led by Ronan McCarthy as acting Captain ably
assisted by his vice Captain, Jordan Egan who both led the team by example. This
was by far the best performance by our Juniors this year and did not deserve to
end in defeat. Greater things will follow for this group. A sincere work of thanks
to their coaches, Shaun McCarthy, Damian Hall and Jason Emery who contributed
so much to the progress of this team. I am very grateful to all of the supporters
who travelled yesterday and positively supported the team. Your behaviour and
support was excellent. Well done. Girls Senior Hockey>
Well
done to the Girls Senior Hockey Team on their 1-0 win over Notre Dame School in
the first round of the Leinster Senior Hockey Cup on Monday. Great credit is due
to Rani Cameron and her team for the determination, spirit and no little skill
that they showed in progressing through to the next round playing under difficult
conditions. It was a true team performance and one that augurs well for the future.
The Senior Hockey Team has set the tone for the other Cup teams to follow and
the spirit and determination of the team will stand them well in their games to
come. Many thanks to Ms. Cathy McKean, Ms. Avril Herriott and Ms. Sarah Scott
for their coaching, referring and organisation.

Young Scientist
Exhibition
Well done to Dearbhail O’Crowley of Transition Year who
won first place in the Social Science Intermediate Section of the Young Scientists’
Exhibition with her project “The Osteoporosis Time Bomb”. She was also awarded
Display Award and won a Special Award sponsored by Food Safe. Dearbhail was the
only student in the Exhibition to be awarded three prizes.
This is an outstanding
and fully merited achievement. Dearbhail put great work over the last months into
her project. The prize is well merited. Dearbhail’s success should motivate other
students to emulate this success and I encourage you all to follow her success
in future years.
Karl Brennan achieved a Highly Commeded Award for his project
entitled “A Study of the Growth of the Potato” in the Junior Biology Category.
Well done to Karl for the work he put into his project.
5th Year Retreat
Well done to all of the 5th Year students who participated in the Retreat on Thursday
last.
All of the reports were very positive from both the staff members involved
and the students who I have met.
It is important for each of you to reflect
on what you learned yesterday and that, as a result of your Retreat, you are now
a more mature, reflective, independent person and that your spiritual well-being
has been enhanced.
Many thanks to the Religion Department for organising the
Retreat and, in particular, to Mr. Maguire and Mr. Jennings for accompanying the
students.
