Cross Country 2008 - 2009

2008 2009 was very successful year for the First and Second year girls cross country squads. The girls came on in leaps and bounds since the beginning of the year, and were speeding around the infamous ‘St Gerard’s Mile’ during their training sessions!

Throughout the year both first and second year squads have competed in the Leinster Cross Country League. The girls raced very well in the first meet in Blackrock on the 29th October, particularly Louise Gilmore, Foidha Campell, Hannah Reynolds, Aine McCabe, Claire Foley, Shannon O Brien whom all finished high up in their field.

Both boys and girls teams ran in the Phoenix Park on the 25th October and in DUC on the 14th January, and were a credit to themselves and their school. With 90 schools entered, all athletes performed well in very wet and mucky conditions. Outstanding performances on the day went to: Claire Foley, Foidha Campell, Cormac Tierney, Shannon O Brien, Aoibheann Boyd, Karla Gallagher and Laura Gallagher.

St Gerard’s School hosted the Wicklow Schools Cross Country Championships on 15th November and all the runners had a fantastic day. The first and second year squads were joined by a number of enthusiastic third, fourth and fifth years who joined in on the day’s great fun. Much thanks to all the students and staff who were a great help on the day! Particular congratulations must go to the Claire Foley for leading the U14 team across the line in 3rd place. This great finish then placed the U14 girls’ team 1st overall.

Cormac Tierney put in powerful performances to cross the line in 5th position in the U15 race. In the U15 Boys race, the St. Gerard’s team finished 1st, with Ross Taylor putting in an outstanding performance finishing 1st overall, closely followed by Declan Keaney, Darragh Cannon and Alex Radic all finishing in the top 10. Not to be out shone, the senior students also but in gallant efforts with Brigid McKeown and Meadhbh Delahunt galloping around the course and finishing 1st in the U17 and U19 age groups respectively.

The cross country season ended with the East Leinster Schools Competition in Avondale House Grounds in Rathdrum. All athletes competed well against the tough opposition. Claire Foley finished strongly and was selected to compete in the Leinster Schools competition in Santry, where she put in yet another excellent performance to finish in the top 30.
