Our Catholic ethos and our social awareness programme are central to the experience of life at St. Gerard’s School. Every year, a select group of Sixth Year students are afforded the unique and life-altering opportunity to travel to Zambia as part of the school’s Outreach Programme. In advance of travelling to Zambia, students participate in a number of fundraising activities. They are also prepared, by an experienced team of dedicated staff, for what life is like in a country very different to their own.
While over there, students visit a number of the projects that are closely linked to St. Gerard’s School. They also actively participate in teaching, painting and agricultural labour while on the programme. The programme is unique to each group of students who participate but will usually take them from the capital, Lusaka, to as far north as Kitwe and as far south as Livingstone. Mere description does not do this programme justice. The programme provides students with an insight into a world far removed from their own. Former students speak passionately about their experience in Zambia and a number have chosen to do further work in countries where their aid is needed during their summer holidays.
