Here in St. Gerard’s School tennis plays an important role in the school’s sports programme.
Starting in September we have tennis coaching available, with a qualified Tennis Ireland Coach, to all students. This coaching continues until March on a weekly basis and builds up to our main tennis season which is from March onwards.
Leinster School Boys/Girls tennis leagues are run throughout the Summer Term and we enter teams at Minor, Junior and Senior Level. Squad coaching is provided to maximise performance.
For those students who do not wish to pursue competitive tennis there is recreational tennis for students, which is proving very popular. This social tennis takes place on the lower hockey pitches now converted to tennis courts.
One of the highlights of the St. Gerard’s Sporting Calendar is St. Gerard’s Family Tennis which takes place in early May. In this tournament a student plays with a family member to fight for this coveted cup. The number of parents who come out of retirement for this event is increased year on year which is wonderful to see.
This year we are proud to say that one of our students, Anna Bowtell, gained her first Senior Irish Woman’s Cap while representing Ireland in the Federation Cup, which was held in Montenegro. This is a tremendous achievement.
In recent times we have had other students who represented Ireland at under age level – David Nolan, Mark Bowtell, Alan Gleeson, Odhran O’Sullivan Hamill – to mention but a few.
